Best Woven Storage Baskets for Every Room

A woven basket is one of those objects that costs $15 or $150 and performs identically at both price points — with one exception. Cheap baskets shed, collapse, or go shapeless after six months of actual use. The ones below are the ones we kept using past the six-month mark.

Our findings: Material determines where a basket performs best. Seagrass handles moisture well (bathrooms, kitchens near sinks). Rattan and water hyacinth hold structure on shelves without deforming under weight. Cotton rope is soft-edged, washable, and ideal for laundry or toy storage. Wire frame baskets with fabric liners combine rigidity with a soft interior.

Best for Bathroom: Serena & Lily Havana Round Baskets

Seagrass is woven tightly enough to support itself upright while remaining flexible enough not to crack. The Havana baskets have a consistent weave, clean interior finish, and come with handles. We used them for rolled towels, toilet paper storage, and hair tools — no moisture damage after eight months in a humid bathroom.

  • Price: $68 (medium, 12 × 12 inches / 30 × 30 cm)
  • Material: Seagrass
  • Handles: Yes
  • Stackable: Yes
  • Best for: Rolled towels, toilet paper, bathroom counter items

The price is real, but so is the construction. The base remains flat on uneven tile without buckling.

Best for Open Shelves: Pottery Barn Woven Seagrass Shelf Basket

This rectangular basket is built to sit flush in a cube shelf (Kallax or similar). The straight sides mean no gaps at the edges. Available in two sizes that correspond to Kallax half-unit and full-unit openings.

  • Price: $34 (standard, fits Kallax full unit)
  • Material: Seagrass with cotton rim
  • Handles: Yes
  • Dimensions: 13 × 15 × 9 inches (33 × 38 × 23 cm)
  • Best for: Cube shelving, office storage, living room display

The cotton-reinforced rim keeps the opening from sagging inward over time. Most cheaper versions skip this detail and the mouth of the basket goes concave within weeks.

Best for Laundry: Lorena Canals Braided Cotton Basket

Cotton rope baskets are washable. That matters for laundry rooms and children’s spaces. The Lorena Canals version is braided densely enough to hold shape under 10 lbs (4.5 kg) of laundry without leaning.

  • Price: $79 (large, 14 × 14 inches / 35 × 35 cm)
  • Material: Braided cotton rope
  • Handles: Yes (leather pulls)
  • Washable: Yes, cold gentle cycle
  • Best for: Laundry, toys, blankets

The leather handles make it easy to carry a full load of laundry one-handed. This basket is also available in a dozen colors, which matters if your laundry room is visible from the main living area.

Best Budget: IKEA NIPPRIG Basket

The NIPPRIG is seagrass, rectangular, and costs $12. It is not as tightly woven as the premium options and the base can warp slightly over time, but it works. We used it for two years in a pantry for snack storage before the base softened enough to notice.

  • Price: $12
  • Material: Seagrass
  • Handles: No
  • Best for: Pantry, closet shelves, low-visibility storage zones

Buy four of these for the inside of cabinets instead of one expensive basket you can see from across the room. The interior of a pantry does not need to be beautiful.

How to Size Baskets Correctly

Measure the shelf or space before buying. A basket should be 1–2 inches smaller than the space on each side so you can actually lift it out. A basket that fits perfectly when empty becomes impossible to remove once full.

For open shelving: buy baskets the same height to create visual uniformity. The contents will vary, but identical basket heights create a calm, organized appearance even when the baskets are stuffed.

For corner floors: round baskets work better in corners than rectangular ones because they do not create dead, inaccessible space behind them. A round basket in a corner is always accessible from the front.
