A mattress topper is not a substitute for a good mattress. This point needs to be made clearly before everything else: a topper cannot fix a sagging, unsupportive, or structurally compromised mattress. If your mattress has a visible body impression greater than 1.5 inches (3.8 cm), or if you wake with lower back pain that resolves within an hour of standing, your mattress is failing and a topper will simply sink into the existing depression. Replace the mattress.
If your mattress is structurally sound but the surface feel is wrong. too firm for your joints, too warm for your sleep temperature, or too flat for the plush feel you want. a topper is an effective, relatively affordable solution. We tested 18 toppers across three material categories over six months of sleep evaluation. Here is what we found.
Understanding What a Topper Actually Changes
A mattress topper sits between your mattress and fitted sheet. It alters the surface feel of the mattress without changing the underlying support. This matters because support (spinal alignment, particularly in the lumbar region) comes from deep compression, while comfort (pressure relief at shoulders, hips, and knees) comes from surface contouring.
Memory foam and latex toppers affect both surface comfort and shallow support. A 3-inch (7.6 cm) memory foam topper on a too-firm mattress can meaningfully soften the pressure point experience for a side sleeper, because shoulder and hip pressure is distributed across the conforming surface rather than concentrated at bony prominences.
Down and down-alternative toppers affect only surface softness. They add a pillow-top layer of texture and warmth without altering the firmness feel of the mattress beneath. If your mattress is too firm, a down topper will feel different but will not actually provide more pressure relief. your shoulder will still compress through the down fill and contact the firm surface below within a few minutes.

Memory Foam Toppers
Memory foam is the most popular topper material and the most misunderstood. It works through viscous response. it deforms slowly under body weight and recovers slowly when weight is removed. This slow response distributes pressure across a larger surface area compared to responsive foam, which is why it excels at reducing hip and shoulder pain for side sleepers on a too-firm mattress.
The liabilities are temperature retention and the “quicksand” feeling of delayed response when changing sleep positions. Both are genuine problems that open-cell and gel-infused formulations have partially solved but not eliminated.
Density is the most important specification in memory foam. Low-density foam (under 3 lbs/cu ft) feels soft initially but compresses permanently within a year. High-density foam (4+ lbs/cu ft) holds its shape, provides better pressure relief, and lasts meaningfully longer. Do not buy a memory foam topper without this specification listed.
ViscoSoft 3-Inch Gel Memory Foam. $160 (Queen)
Density: 3.5 lbs/cu ft Thickness: 3 inches (7.6 cm) Cover: Removable, machine-washable bamboo-blend fabric Certifications: CertiPUR-US
The ViscoSoft is our top-value pick in memory foam. The 3.5 lbs/cu ft density is high enough to avoid the premature compression that plagues cheaper toppers. The gel infusion actively moves heat away from the sleep surface. not as cool as latex, but meaningfully cooler than non-infused memory foam. In our testing, surface temperature at 2 hours was 3–4°F (1.7–2.2°C) lower than with a standard memory foam topper.
The 3-inch (7.6 cm) thickness is the sweet spot for side sleepers. At 2 inches (5 cm), you will feel the underlying mattress through the topper after a few hours. At 4 inches (10.2 cm), the foam becomes so deep that spinal alignment is compromised for back and stomach sleepers. The removable cover is a genuine practical advantage. down alternatives and wool toppers are not easily washable. This one is.
Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Topper Supreme. $429 (Queen)
Density: 5.3 lbs/cu ft Thickness: 3 inches (7.6 cm) Cover: Non-removable stretch knit Certifications: CertiPUR-US
For anyone with significant joint pain who sleeps on a too-firm mattress, the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Topper Supreme is the best-performing memory foam product available. The proprietary TEMPUR material is 5.3 lbs/cu ft. substantially denser than consumer memory foam. and the pressure-relief difference is measurable and immediate. Shoulder pressure in side sleeping position was noticeably lower across our panel of testers with rotator cuff sensitivity.
The tradeoffs are cost ($429 vs. $160 for the ViscoSoft), a non-removable cover, and the warmest sleep temperature of any foam product we tested. Tempur-Pedic offers a 10-year warranty, which is meaningfully longer than any competitor.
Natural Latex Toppers
Latex foam is processed from harvested rubber tree sap. It is the most durable topper material available and the most responsive. it springs back to original shape within milliseconds of movement, unlike memory foam’s several-second recovery. This responsiveness makes position changes easier and eliminates the “stuck” feeling some sleepers experience with memory foam.
There are two processing methods that produce meaningfully different products:
Dunlop latex is poured into a mold and allowed to cure. The heavier particles settle toward the bottom, making Dunlop denser and firmer throughout. Dunlop latex is more durable and better for back and stomach sleepers who need support.
Talalay latex is poured, vacuum-sealed to expand it, then flash-frozen before curing. The result is a more uniform, consistent cell structure that is softer and more conforming than Dunlop at the same ILD rating. Talalay is generally preferred by side sleepers who need pressure relief similar to memory foam with better temperature regulation.
Sleep On Latex Pure Green. $265 (Queen)
Material: 100% Dunlop Latex (GOLS certified organic) Thickness: 2 inches (5.1 cm) ILD (firmness): Available in Soft (19), Medium (25), Firm (30) Cover: None (sold separately)
The Sleep On Latex Pure Green is the best latex topper for the price. The GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certification verifies the organic latex content and manufacturing process. important because synthetic latex and blended latex toppers are often marketed under the same “natural latex” language. The Pure Green is genuinely 100% natural Dunlop.
The 2-inch (5.1 cm) Soft version (19 ILD) adds noticeable contouring over a firm mattress without the depth that compromises spinal alignment. The Medium (25 ILD) is appropriate over a medium-firm mattress for combination sleepers. We recommend ordering the cover ($45 separately) to protect the latex from skin oils and extend its lifespan.
Latex retains shape through a decade of use. A 10-year-old Sleep On Latex topper will outperform a 3-year-old memory foam topper in pressure relief and support. The investment calculus favors latex for long-term buyers.
Saatva Latex Mattress Topper. $375 (Queen)
Material: 100% Talalay Latex Thickness: 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) ILD: Plush (19) Cover: Quilted organic cotton, included
The Saatva latex topper is our recommendation for hot sleepers who want the pressure relief of memory foam without the heat retention. Talalay latex at 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) provides shoulder and hip contouring sufficient for side sleeping while the open-cell structure allows exceptional airflow. Surface temperature in our testing was the lowest of any topper we evaluated across all categories.
The quilted organic cotton cover is included (unlike the Sleep On Latex, which requires a separate cover purchase) and adds a thin layer of surface softness. The cover is removable and machine washable.
The 1.5-inch thickness is thinner than most toppers. On a moderately firm mattress, the effect is a noticeable softening. On a very firm mattress, it may not be enough. consider the Sleep On Latex 2-inch Soft instead.
Down and Down-Alternative Toppers
Down toppers. also called mattress pads with baffle-box construction and significant fill. add a pillow-top feel to a mattress. They are filled with duck or goose down and hold their loft through sewn chambers (baffle-box construction) that prevent fill migration. The result is soft, warm, and luxurious in feel.
Down toppers provide no meaningful pressure relief. The fill compresses under body weight within minutes, and the underlying mattress surface becomes the effective contact surface. If you sleep hot, down is also incorrect. it traps body heat. Down is the right choice if your mattress is sufficiently supportive and you simply want to add a cloud-like surface softness and warmth without altering the support structure.
Parachute Down Mattress Topper. $349 (Queen)
Fill: 750-fill-power European white down Construction: Baffle-box (prevents fill shift) Shell: 300 TC cotton sateen, OEKO-TEX certified Thickness: Approximately 3 inches (7.6 cm) when new
The Parachute Down Mattress Topper is the best standard down topper available at a non-luxury price. The 750-fill-power rating indicates high-quality down clusters that hold loft well. lower fill powers (under 600) compress permanently faster. The baffle-box sewn-through construction maintains even fill distribution across the sleep surface. After 18 months of testing, our unit retained over 80% of its original loft.
The OEKO-TEX certification covers the shell fabric but not the down fill itself. for Responsible Down Standard (RDS) certification, which verifies ethical sourcing of down, look to brands like Coyuchi or Boll & Branch.
Buffy Cloud Comforter Used as Mattress Topper. $195 (Queen)
For those seeking a down-alternative, hypoallergenic option, the Buffy Cloud down-alternative topper uses recycled polyester fill in a baffle-box construction. It is machine washable and dryable. a genuine practical advantage over down, which requires professional cleaning for full-size toppers.
The fill is softer and lighter than down but does not hold loft as long (typical lifespan 2–4 years vs. 5–8 for quality down). For hot sleepers who want surface softness without warmth, this is the correct choice. polyester fill breathes more than down.
Specialty: Wool Toppers
Wool mattress toppers are the least mainstream option but deserve mention for specific sleepers. Natural wool fiber is hygroscopic. it actively absorbs and releases moisture vapor, keeping the sleep surface dry rather than allowing sweat to pool. This property makes wool toppers exceptionally good for sleepers who experience night sweats or who sleep in climates with significant humidity variation between seasons.
Wool does not run either hot or cold. It insulates in winter and wicks in summer. For year-round comfort without seasonal swapping of bedding, a quality wool topper outperforms every other material category.
Coyuchi Organic Merino Wool Mattress Topper. $410 (Queen)
Fill: Certified organic Merino wool Shell: Organic cotton Thickness: 1 inch (2.5 cm) Certifications: GOTS certified organic
The Coyuchi topper is thin. 1 inch (2.5 cm). and does not alter firmness feel meaningfully. Its value is entirely in temperature regulation and moisture management. For a sleeper who wakes with damp sheets but whose mattress is otherwise comfortable, this topper is the correct single intervention.
How to Choose
Side sleepers with joint pain on a too-firm mattress: 3-inch (7.6 cm) memory foam, 3.5+ lbs/cu ft density. ViscoSoft ($160) for value, Tempur-Pedic ($429) for maximum pressure relief.
Combination and back sleepers who run hot: 2-inch (5.1 cm) natural latex, Soft or Medium ILD. Sleep On Latex Pure Green ($265) for Dunlop, Saatva ($375) for Talalay.
Sleepers who want surface plush without firmness change: Parachute Down Topper ($349) or Buffy Cloud alternative ($195) if hypoallergenic is required.
Night sweats or year-round temperature instability: Coyuchi Organic Merino Wool ($410).
The one thing to check before buying any topper: remove your fitted sheet, put your palm flat on the mattress, and press down firmly. If your hand sinks more than 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) into an indentation rather than compressing uniformly, the mattress is sagging. No topper will fix this. Save the topper budget toward a new mattress.
